Working primarily with acrylic paint, ink, and pastel, she creates\u003cbr\u003eintuitive compositions characterized by rhythmic repetition, organic forms, layered\u003cbr\u003etextures, and expressive mark-making.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: center;\"\u003e\u003cbr\u003eBérénos spent more than two decades in Amsterdam, where she studied,\u003cbr\u003egraduated, and developed an international career in the performing arts. Her\u003cbr\u003ebackground in choreography, dance education, and movement continues to shape\u003cbr\u003eher visual language, infusing her paintings with a strong sense of rhythm, energy,\u003cbr\u003eand flow. After returning to Curaçao, she worked as an artistic director in creative\u003cbr\u003eeducation before fully dedicating herself to her independent art practice in 2019.\u003cbr\u003eHer first solo exhibition was presented at The Curaçao Museum, followed by several solo and group exhibitions in Curaçao. Her work has been acquired by\u003cbr\u003eprivate collectors and is held in collections locally and internationally. Known for\u003cbr\u003eboth intimate works as well as large-scale pieces and commissions, she has\u003cbr\u003ecompleted public art projects, including an 800-square-metre commissioned\u003cbr\u003efloorpainting.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: center;\"\u003e\u003cbr\u003eWhile creating from her studio, Bérénos contributes to charity auctions and\u003cbr\u003ecollaborative community initiatives. My earliest paintings were very personal but my art has\u003cbr\u003egradually evolved toward a more universal terrain. Working primarily through abstraction, my process is intuitive; I enter a state of focused concentration. Through repetition of lines, patterns, layered forms, and shifting spatial relationships, the painting emerges.\u003cbr\u003eThe island's flora and fauna—especially the sea, the plants, and their patterns—provide direct inspiration for my paintings. I also think deeply about the region’s complex history and cultural inheritances: the connections to Africa, South\u003cbr\u003eAmerica, and Indigenous cultures.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: center;\"\u003e\u003cbr\u003eFor the exhibition Caribbean Soul, I created a diptych that reflects on the Caribbean\u003cbr\u003eas a space of convergence where cultures, beliefs, histories, and identities meet,\u003cbr\u003eoverlap, and transform one another.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: center;\"\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe diptych Alakondre I \u0026amp; II takes its name from the Sranan Tongo term Ala Kondre,\u003cbr\u003eliterally meaning \"All Lands.\" Rooted in Surinamese Winti culture—Suriname being\u003cbr\u003ethe country where my grandparents lived—the concept represents an embrace of\u003cbr\u003eplurality: of many origins, truths, faiths, and many ways of being. It is about\u003cbr\u003edifference enriching a community rather than weakening it.\u003cbr\u003eAlakondre I \u0026amp; II is a visual meditation on Caribbean society and daily life itself; it\u003cbr\u003ecannot be understood through a single narrative; it exists as layered and evolving\u003cbr\u003erealities where multiple identities coexist. This understanding is why I use multiple mediums, primarily acrylic paint, pastel,\u003cbr\u003eChinese ink, and spray paint. Occasionally, figures and symbols appear within my\u003cbr\u003epieces.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: center;\"\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI am particularly drawn to Creole spiritual traditions that emerged from African\u003cbr\u003esystems of knowledge and their encounter with the Americas. They offer ways of\u003cbr\u003econnecting to the earth, the unseen, the cosmos.
