Description:
I consider myself a traveler and have visited 24 countries so far, I've yet to find a place that offer the same peace that you find in the Caribbean islands. Something about the energy of this place combined with the energy of the people creates this incomparable feeling that's unique to our region. With this work I wanted to tap into that feeling of walking across the pasture to pick fresh fruit from the trees, seeing the egrets feeding in the field, moments of passing by rum shop down the street and hearing the slam of dominoes on a makeshift table surrounded by the elder men in the community. Or just simply sitting on the veranda watching the trees blow while listening to the birds sing. Being in the Caribbean is so grounding, it allows for me to paint from that place of peace with hopes of capturing the feeling of calm and contentment on the canvas. I intentionally toyed with disproportion to create a dreamlike, surrealist feel and bold patterns that add a whimsical element to the piece. The cotton cord sways gently with light wind, giving a sense of a breezy countryside afternoon. The idea is to have a safe space within the work that feels like home, a peace of mind that you can access at any time, on any day.
