Description:

Elder of the Reef celebrates one of the Caribbean’s most iconic marine species the sea turtle. Symbolizing wisdom, resilience, and the region’s natural heritage, this gentle creature glides through clear blue Caribbean waters, rising to the surface for air as tiny bubbles trail from its mouth. Calm, graceful, and increasingly endangered throughout the Caribbean, the sea turtle was chosen to raise awareness of its survival and the marine ecosystems it helps protect. Moving with purpose, its shell glows in shades of amber, orange, and gold, reflecting sunlight filtering through the sea and the colours of a Caribbean sunset.

Surrounding the turtle is a vibrant underwater habitat filled with coral-yellow angelfish, blackand-white butterflyfish, and pink squirrelfish. Positioned in different directions, these fish guide the viewer’s eye throughout the painting, creating movement and energy. Vertical brushstrokes in the water further suggest the flow of ocean currents.

Below, the reef flourishes with brain coral, yellow tube sponges, jellyfish, and other marine life. An eel peeks from its sheltered home among the reef structures. Together, these elements reflect the richness of Caribbean marine ecosystems a kaleidoscope of colour that remains peaceful and balanced. The water shifts from light turquoise to deep ocean blue, creating depth and calm. The mosaic patterns on the turtle’s flippers echo the colours and designs of Madras fabric and Caribbean carnival beadwork, blending cultural identity with marine life. More than a creature of the sea, the turtle becomes a symbol of Caribbean heritage and stewardship a guardian of the waters and ecosystems that sustain life throughout the region.
