Description:
Bequia is the largest grenadine island within St. Vincent and the Grenadines,
this little dot on the worlds map has a culture that no one would know unless
you had visited before. Bequia's whaling traditions are a unique cultural heritage which dates back to the 1870s, characterized by traditional hunting methods and a strong
community connection to the sea.
Historical Context:
Whaling in Bequia was introduced in the 1870s by a Scottish whaler named
William Wallace. Initially, it was a response to the need for protein and
income after the decline of agriculture on the island. The methods used for
hunting and processing whales have remained largely unchanged since then,
reflecting a deep-rooted tradition that has been passed down through
generations.
This painting was done in a vibrant representation of the Caribbean lifestyle,
to represent the how important whaling was to and still is to Bequia.
