Description:
Inspired by a short poem by the late Jamaican poet Olive Senior entitled ‘guava’ from her book, ‘Gardening In The Tropics’.
The poem evoked ideas of the performance and afflictions of relationships both good and bad, while contextually grounding itself in Caribbean aesthetics, which I find kinship with in terms of my practice, the use of poetic analogy to the beat of a Caribbean drum. I unearth new definitions of Caribbean aesthetics, womanhood, relationships, island life, and (in my opinion) under-explored truths of more individualistic experiences within a Caribbean context.
The piece depicts a expanding landscape through a stained glass window looking out on flora and fauna, but in its most focal point, two guavas, one of is being eaten at by worms, having “given access” to them.
