Description:
It is impossible to speak about that Caribbean without recognizing the significant impact of both Christianity and slavery. Christianity played a controversial role during slavery. It arrived alongside colonialism, and was sometimes used to justify the oppression and enslavement of Africans. Meanwhile Christianity condemned slavery and later became leaders in abolitionist movements. The black woman with the halo and Agnus Dei imagery, invites the viewer to examine how religious symbols can still reinforce a systems of power, even as they are used to emancipate.
