Description:
The natural landscape was a major inspiration for the work; that is, the way it is ascribed
traditionally feminine attributes such as docility despite being unpredictable. Here, the figures take on a wild, monstrous form, personifying the natural world. The colour palette aids in this portrayal by reflecting a burning forest. The distortion of the body is highly visible whereas the lack of facial features suggests the removal of the most obvious sense of self. In this case, the destruction of the ‘ideal’ Caribbean woman is necessary in liberating the masses. The title of the work is derived from the figures as they represent a third, transitionary phase between destruction and regrowth.
