Peat

Hannah Seucharan, Trinidad & Tobago

Medium: Acrylic on canvas
Dimensions: 24.5 x 32.5 inches

Year: 2026

Description:

The theme of the natural world persists in this work. It suggests that the decay of the colonial gaze lies in the profane. The clashing blues, greens and reds create a sick and unsettling feeling. The figures crouch together, protecting each other in an act of solidarity. Like decaying peat, the ‘impure’ Caribbean woman is an offense to the senses. However, it is this non-conformity and inherent profanity that keeps the culture alive. In order to reflect this aspect of the natural world, the colours, composition and markmaking work together to create a cramped, discomforting effect
