Ailsa Anastatia

B. 1978 - Curaçao

Ailsa Anastatia is a multidisciplinary artist whose work is rooted in the landscapes of Curaçao and the wider Caribbean. Working across painting, textiles, embroidery, and installation, she explores themes of resilience, adaptation, memory, and the relationship between people and place.

Drawing inspiration from the Caribbean mondi, Anastatia creates layered works that reflect the forces that shape both landscapes and communities. Through processes of staining, erosion, repair, and accumulation, her materials are allowed to transform over time, mirroring the ways environments and cultures continuously adapt to changing conditions.

Her practice examines resilience not as a fixed achievement but as an ongoing process of adjustment, survival, and renewal. The landscapes she references become metaphors for broader Caribbean experiences, where histories, cultures, and people have been shaped by movement, hardship, and transformation while remaining deeply rooted in place.

Anastatia studied at the Fontys School of Fine and Performing Arts in Tilburg and the Amsterdam University of the Arts. Her work has been exhibited internationally and was recognized as Curator’s Choice at the Atlantic World Art Fair (AWAF) 2022.
