Using Curaçao as a point of departure, this work reflects on a Caribbean landscape shaped by constant negotiation. Within the island’s mondi, vegetation grows through, around, and alongside other forms, adapting to drought, wind, salt, and limited resources. Survival is rarely isolated; it exists through relationships, crossings,
and coexistence. Layers of color, line, and texture accumulate across the surface,
allowing forms to emerge, intersect, and dissolve. Rather than depicting a specific place, the work draws from the rhythms and structures of the landscape itself, where growth and erosion, presence and absence, exist simultaneously. For me, these patterns extend beyond the natural environment. They echo broader Caribbean experiences shaped by movement, adaptation, and the ability to respond to changing circumstances
while remaining connected to place. In this sense, Caribbean soul is not defined by a single image or identity, but by an ongoing capacity to adjust, persist, and find new ways forward.
